Oshiomhole, Obaseki Fight: Looming Violence In Edo

17 Lawmakers Impeach Edo Speaker
A situation that could spiral out of control is playing out in Edo State ahead of the governorship election, with the state's house of assembly as the joker.

As former APC chairman, Adams Oshiomhole and Governor Godwin Obaseki continue to flex muscles over political power, Seventeen members-elect of the Edo State House of Assembly were hurriedly sworn in by deputy clerk of the Edo Assembly on Thursday.

The event took place at an undisclosed location within Benin City following 'renovation' work at the Assembly complex. But the newly inaugurated members immediately claim to have peached the Speaker.

Out of the 17 lawmakers, 14 are members-elect who were previously bypassed when the Governor proclaimed the Assembly in a controversial manner that saw the inauguration of 10 members of the 24-member House.

The speaker said he can't be impeached outside the house of assembly complex, the Oshiomhole and Ize-Iyamu camp are insisting the speaker has been impeached.

The situation is chaotic with police involvement and all. These developments have attracted the attention of INEC as the electoral umpire.

INEC has expressed concerns over what it described as “ugly reports” of violence coming from politicians in Edo State ahead of the governorship elections scheduled for September 19.

The commission chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu said they would summon the campaign council of political parties and candidates participating in the Edo election over the threat of violence.
